The Atlantic: Article " Why affirmative action no longer works"

Source : Wikipedia
Origins
The term "affirmative action" was first used in the United States in Executive Order 10925 and was signed by President John F. Kennedy on March 6, 1961. It was used to promote actions that achieve non-discrimination. In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued Executive Order 11246 which required government employers to take "affirmative action" to "hire without regard to race, religion and national origin".[clarification needed] In 1967, sex was added to the anti-discrimination list.
Purpose
Affirmative action is intended to promote the opportunities of defined minority groups within a society to give them equal access to that of the privileged majority population.[citation needed]
It is often instituted for government and educational settings to ensure that certain designated "minority groups" within a society are included "in all programs".[clarification needed] The stated justification for affirmative action by its proponents is that it helps to compensate for past discrimination, persecution or exploitation by the ruling class of a culture, and to address existing discrimination.

Article : My students don't know how to have a conversation
( Mine do ! I can assure you! )
"It’s no surprise to any teacher or parent that teenagers rely heavily on cell phones for communication. According to the Pew Research Center, one in three teens sends over 100 text messages a day. More than half of teens use texting to communicate daily with friends, versus only 33 percent who regularly talk face to face. Cell phone use is rampant at most schools (mine included), despite attempts to restrict or even integrate it into the curriculum....."

David Bailey's portrait of Queen to mark birthday
"A portrait of the Queen by British photographer David Bailey has been released in honour of her 88th birthday on Monday.
The black and white photo, which shows the Queen smiling, was taken in March.
She is pictured wearing pearls, and a dress by Angela Kelly, who has served as personal assistant and senior dresser to her since 2002.
Mr Bailey has previously snapped celebrities such as Mick Jagger, and criminals Ronnie and Reggie Kray.
The Queen celebrates her actual birthday on 21 April, and her official birthday on a Saturday in June, which this year falls on 14 June in the UK.
'Mischievous glint'The photograph, taken at Buckingham Palace, was commissioned on behalf of the government's "Great" campaign, which aims to promote trade, tourism, investment and education throughout the UK."
