"The Chicago City Council has approved a $5.5 million reparation package for victims of police torture under former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge.
More than 100 African-American men were victims of police brutality between 1972 and 1991. In many cases, victims were tortured into making false confessions, leading to wrongful convictions and prison sentences."

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia"Justice delayed is justice denied" is a legal maxim meaning that if legal redress is available for a party that has suffered some injury, but is not forthcoming in a timely fashion, it is effectively the same as having no redress at all. This principle is the basis for the right to a speedy trial and similar rights which are meant to expedite the legal system, because it is unfair for the injured party to have to sustain the injury with little hope for resolution. The phrase has become a rallying cry for legal reformers who view courts or governments as acting too slowly in resolving legal issues either because the existing system is too complex or overburdened, or because the issue or party in question lacks political favour.

THE ATLANTIC
The 'Depraved-Heart Murder' of Freddie Gray
Six Baltimore police officers are charged in connection with his death, including one for second-degree murder.
The term "depraved heart" means something more than conduct amounting to a high or unreasonable risk to human life. The perpetrator must realize the risk his behavior has created to the extent that his conduct may be termed willful. Moreover, the conduct must contain an element of viciousness or contemptuous disregard for the value of human life which conduct characterizes that behavior as wanton.

Route 66’s legacy of racial segregation
The Negro Motorist Green Book, published 1936-1964, was more than a guide book; it was a lifesaver in the racist world of southern and western US states, featuring motels and businesses that extended their services to black travellers before the civil rights movement helped bring about change

Photo Analysis
There are two photo links to use for this activity:
- Selma-to-Montgomery march, Alabama Sovereignty Commission, Alabama Department of Archives and History Public Information
- Spider Martin Photo Gallery of the Selma-to-Montgomery march, Spider Martin Official Site
Have students select at least five images from each link that they think are the most moving. Students will use the images to create a photo journal to tell the story of the 1965 Selma-to-Montgomery voting rights march. Each image must have a caption. The journal should have a brief introduction explaining the importance of the march. If students do not have access to the Internet, the teacher should select the images to display. The images may be shown as a PowerPoint presentation or copied and used as transparencies. In either case, students should use the Photo Analysis Worksheet (pdf) to interpret the documents.
