trailer/ 2'22:
http://www.theguardian.com/film/video/2014/apr/02/jimmys-hall-trailer-ken-loach-film-video
"In 1921 Jimmy Gralton’s sin was to build a dance hall on a rural crossroads in an Ireland on the brink of Civil War. The Pearse-Connolly Hall was a place where young people could come to learn, to argue, to dream…but above all to dance and have fun. As the hall grew in popularity its socialist and free-spirited reputation brought it to the attention of the church and politicians who forced Jimmy to flee and the hall to close. A decade later, at the height of the Depression, Jimmy returns to Co. Leitrim from the US to look after his mother and vows to live the quiet life. The hall stands abandoned and empty, and despite the pleas of the local youngsters, remains shut. However as Jimmy reintegrates into the community and sees the poverty, and growing cultural oppression, the leader and activist within him is stirred. He makes the decision to reopen the hall in the face of what they may bring…"

who are they talking about?
Why is the painter scared?
Who is the other man? The Queen's husband, the King?
What do we learn about the Queen's personality?
What's wrong with the Queen's face? Do you think it's exaggerated? What's the difference with the portrait?
why is the portrait so important? Function of the portrait?

Source : Wikipedia :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portraiture_of_Elizabeth_I_of_England
"The queen's hand rests on a globe below the crown of England, "her fingers covering the Americas, indicating England's dominion of the seas and plans for imperialist expansion in the New World" The Queen is flanked by two columns behind, probably a reference to the famous impress of the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V, Philip II of Spain's father, which represented the pillars of Hercules, gateway to the Atlantic Ocean and the New World.
In the background view on the left, English fireships threaten the Spanish fleet, and on the right the ships are driven onto a rocky coast amid stormy seas by the "Protestant Wind". On a secondary level, these images show Elizabeth turning her back on storm and darkness while sunlight shines where she gazes."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armada_Portrait
The message she is sending :She is saying she is wealthy and powerful e.g the crown next to her and expensive clothes/jewellery. She is saying shes a powerful war leader e.g Armana in the background being defeated. Phillip wanted England to be Catholic and Elizabeth is showing the protestants can win. She is a dominate figure- hand on globe to signal an empire: e.g America, Africa especially - e.g Franis Drake captured slaves.

BRIDE AND PREJUDICE TRAILER : CO EO
CHRISTMAS IN INDiA : VISUAL DOCUMENT worksheet
WEBQUEST : India-Webquest
The nature of relations between the British and Indians changed over time, as did British attitudes toward India and Indians. In earlier days some Britons assimilated readily to Oriental ways of life or even intermarried with Indians. Particularly after the traumatic uprising of 1857-58, however, relations were often strained, as conventional ideas about European racial superiority became more prominent and as Victorian notions of morality and evangelical movements to convert the world to a particular kind of Christianity became influential. By the latter part of the 19th century, for example, the idea of a "respectable" English person marrying an Indian was virtually unthinkable. Of course, the very fact that the British were by definition a ruling elite and Indians -- however rich or important -- a subject people often strained relations. This could exacerbate cultural misunderstandings, a situation which is the focus of E.M. Forster's great anti-imperial novel,

Cartoon: Is There Life on Mars?
BACKGROUND India has successfully launched a spacecraft to Mars - with the aim of becoming the fourth space agency to reach the Red Planet. The spacecraft is set to travel for 300 days, reaching Mars orbit in 2014. If the satellite orbits the Red Planet, India's space agency will become the fourth in the world after those of the US, Russia and Europe to undertake a successful Mars mission. Full story >> THE CARTOON The cartoon by Peter Brookes from The Times shows the Indian rocket shooting off into space while down below hundreds of Indians are clinging precariously to a train. One of them asks the rhetorical question, "Is there a life down here?" (i.e. a life worth living). COMMENTARY The cartoonist uses a line from a well-known David Bowie song to question the utility of a 'poor' country like India, which has serious infrastructure and public health problems (to name but two), spending $74m on a mission to Mars and roughly $1 billion a year on its overall space programme.
GRAMMAR Note the way in which the word 'life' is used in both an uncountable and countable form. In the phrase, "Is there life on Mars?" the word 'life' is uncountable because we are talking about living things in general. • Is there intelligent life on other planets? However, in the phrase "Is there a life down here?", the man is referring to the activities that form a particular part of a person's life. • He has had a good life. See here for more on the usage and meanings of 'life'.

Watch this extract from Smoke by Wayne Wang and PaulAuster
A still from Manhattan : " A city in black and white"
A still from Smoke ( a photo in Auggie Wren's album)
Who is the narrator? What's his job?
What's his passion?
Are the photos really "all the same"? What does Auggie Wren explain to the "novelist" Paul Benjamin?
What is the key sentence in this extract? ("slow down")
What is the "moral" of this extract? Paul Benjamin ( the writer) should have guessed...
What about the music? Compare with Manhattan and Gershwin in Rhapsody in Blue
Find the quotation from Shakespeare.
What is the MOOD in this extract?
Vision of "New York" or vision of the photographer's state of mind?
Your conclusion?(= feelings too!)
What do the 2 film extracts have in common?
Read Auggie Wren's Christmas Story : It is a story within a larger story.
What does it tell us about writing, authorship and telling stories?
What does it tell us about life, vision, taking and giving?
Telling a story, taking a photo, shooting a film and giving (life)...
Telling a story and visual arts (photo, film or the reader's ability to visualize..)
Watch this extract to understand Paul Benjamin's problem:

"you hide in your mansions"" corpulent generals safe behind lines""
les "puppets" and "pawns in the game"
Constat seulement.
