On NPR : 'Americanah' Author Explains ’Learning’ To Be Black In The U. S
Adichie is a MacArthur Fellowship winner and author of the novels Purple Hibiscus and Half of A Yellow Sun. Her novel Americanah explores this question of what it means to be black in the U.S., and tells the story of a young Nigerian couple, one of whom leaves for England and the other of whom leaves for America.
The title, she says, is a Nigerian word for those who have been to the U.S. and return with American affectations.
"It's often used," she says, "in the context of a kind of gentle mockery."

Edward R. Murrow.
Food for thought on this theme: "The Power of Words"
CBS NEWS
"See It Now" anniversary: When Edward R. Murrow stood up to Joseph McCarthy
"March 8, 2014, 8:25 AM|Nearly 60 years ago on "See It Now," legendary CBS newsman Edward R. Murrow changed the face of journalism by criticizing Wisconsin Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy’s anti-communist witch-hunt. Historian and CBS News consultant Douglas Brinkley joins “CBS This Morning: Saturday” with a look McCarthy’s political downfall." CBS quote
Edward R. Murrow's famous broadcast as he challenges McCarthy , quoting Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and ending with these now famous words : "Good night and good luck"
TRANSCRIPT:
"No one familiar with the history of this country can deny that congressional committees are useful. It is necessary to investigate before legislating, but the line between investigating and persecuting is a very fine one and the junior Senator from Wisconsin has stepped over it repeatedly. His primary achievement has been in confusing the public mind, as between the internal and the external threats of Communism. We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. We must remember always that accusation is not proof and that conviction depends upon evidence and due process of law. We will not walk in fear, one of another. We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason, if we dig deep in our history and our doctrine, and remember that we are not descended from fearful men -- not from men who feared to write, to speak, to associate and to defend causes that were, for the moment, unpopular.
This is no time for men who oppose Senator McCarthy's methods to keep silent, or for those who approve. We can deny our heritage and our history, but we cannot escape responsibility for the result. There is no way for a citizen of a republic to abdicate his responsibilities. As a nation we have come into our full inheritance at a tender age. We proclaim ourselves, as indeed we are, the defenders of freedom, wherever it continues to exist in the world, but we cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home.
The actions of the junior Senator from Wisconsin have caused alarm and dismay amongst our allies abroad, and given considerable comfort to our enemies. And whose fault is that? Not really his. He didn't create this situation of fear; he merely exploited it -- and rather successfully. Cassius was right. "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves."
Good night, and good luck."

FROM THE ENGLISH BLOG ( Jeffrey Hill):
February 28, 2014
Cartoon: Mrs Merkel Meets Her Majesty
BACKGROUND
The German Chancellor Angela Merkel was given the red-carpet treatment on her one-day visit to London, addressing both Houses of Parliament in the Royal Gallery of the Palace of Westminster and taking tea with the Queen at Buckingham Palace, prompting one German reporter to remark that she was being received as "the Queen of Europe". See video >>THE CARTOON
The cartoon by Paul Thomas from the Daily Express shows the Queen welcoming Mrs Merkel to Buckingham Palace. The Queen's husband, Prince Philip (aka the Duke of Edinburgh) stands nearby with a gag tied around his mouth.
EXPLANATION
Prince Philip is renowned for making verbal gaffes or clangers (see here for a 'best of'), so the Queen has gagged him to avoid him making any embarassing or offensive remarks to their important German visitor (like mentioning the war!)COMMENT
Actually, Prince Philip is a member of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, a German ducal house, so he should feel at home with Frau Merkel.THANKS TO JEFFREY HILL!
