BROOKLYN MUSEUM: NORMAN ROCKWELL BEHIND THE CAMERA
http://www.brooklynmuseum.org/exhibitions/norman_rockwell/
"November 19, 2010–April 10, 2011
Beginning in the late 1930s, Norman Rockwell adopted photography as a tool to bring his illustration ideas to life in studio sessions. Working as a director, Rockwell carefully staged his photographs, selecting props and locations, choosing his models, and orchestrating every detail. He created an abundance of photographs for each new subject, sometimes capturing complete compositions and other times combining separate pictures of individual elements. These photographs were the focus of a recently completed two-year project at the Norman Rockwell Museum that preserved and digitized almost 20,000 negatives. For the first time, Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera presents these study photographs alongside his paintings, drawings, and related tear sheets to offer a fascinating look at the artist’s working process."

BBC TERRIBLE TUDORS ( On peut commencer par cette vidéo en collège!)
Permet déjà de dégager plusieurs aspects utiles par la suite..
who are they talking about?
Why is the painter scared?
Who is the other man? The Queen's husband, the King?
What do we learn about the Queen's personality?
What's wrong with the Queen's face? Do you think it's exaggerated? What's the difference with the portrait?
why is the portrait so important? Function of the portrait?

Elizabeth I (Armada Portrait) Public Domain
Source : Wikipedia :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portraiture_of_Elizabeth_I_of_England
"The queen's hand rests on a globe below the crown of England, "her fingers covering the Americas, indicating England's dominion of the seas and plans for imperialist expansion in the New World" The Queen is flanked by two columns behind, probably a reference to the famous impress of the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V, Philip II of Spain's father, which represented the pillars of Hercules, gateway to the Atlantic Ocean and the New World.
In the background view on the left, English fireships threaten the Spanish fleet, and on the right the ships are driven onto a rocky coast amid stormy seas by the "Protestant Wind". On a secondary level, these images show Elizabeth turning her back on storm and darkness while sunlight shines where she gazes."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armada_Portrait
The message she is sending :She is saying she is wealthy and powerful e.g the crown next to her and expensive clothes/jewellery. She is saying shes a powerful war leader e.g Armana in the background being defeated. Phillip wanted England to be Catholic and Elizabeth is showing the protestants can win. She is a dominate figure- hand on globe to signal an empire: e.g America, Africa especially - e.g Franis Drake captured slaves.

Changing faces: 500 years of women
http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/20141017-changing-face-500-years-of-women
"
From Renaissance paintings by Titian, Raphael and Botticelli to Picasso’s 1946 sketch of his lover, portraits of women made over the past 500 years stare back at us. Among them are virgins, housewives and goddesses: they look out from the canvas with a coy sideways glance, a challenging stare and a wistful gaze.
While many of the portraits conform to conventional ideas of beauty, some break the mould. The dishevelled hair of Da Vinci’s La Scapigliata from 1508 caused a stir, and Kazimir Malevich deconstructed the female torso in his series painted between 1928 and 1933. It is a vision that is influencing cutting-edge fashion today.
Knud Merrild reinterpreted the movie star; Amedeo Modigliani elongated his sitter’s neck; Salvador Dalí carved out his sitter’s features from a fruit dish. It is a mesmerising journey through 500 years of Western art."
